Brownwood News – The National Weather Service San Angelo has issued a Tornado Watch for Northwestern Brown County, and Northeastern Coleman County until 10 p.m.

Earlier today, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 8 miles southwest of Burkett, or 8 miles northeast of Coleman, moving east at 40 mph. Weather Radar indicated rotation within the storm at that time. A tornado warning was issued, but later changed to a tornado watch alert.

A tornado watch means that the potential exists for the development of a tornado. This type of alert does not mean that a tornado has been seen or even indicated on radar, it just means that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in thunderstorms. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

A tornado warning, on the other hand, requires more immediate action and should be taken very seriously. Citizens should take shelter, to avoid flying debris. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely. During a tornado warning, citizens should move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Heavy rainfall may hide a tornado. Do not wait to see or hear the tornado before seeking shelter.
