Brownwood News – A two year old boy has been reunited with relatives after walking alone to a city park several hundred yards away from his home yesterday evening.

According to a statement from Early Police Chief David Mercer, on Wednesday, May 17th, at approximately 8:45 p.m. the Early Police Department received a call of a small child found alone at the Early City Park.

The caller stated they were the last to leave the park and all the lights were out except the security light. The reporting person stated that the when he walked out near the playground area he caught a glimpse of a small child sitting alone. The caller and his wife searched the area to see if someone may still be left in the park but were unable to locate anyone else. At that point, they called the police.

The child was picked up and taken to the Early Police Department at which time Child Protective Services (CPS) was also notified. The child was identified as a Hispanic male, approximately 2 years old. The child’s picture was posted on social media in the hopes that someone might know the child or the family. That post was quickly shared over 1,000 times and about an hour from the time the child was found, the family was located and came to the Police Department.

The child’s parents do not have custody, and the boy had been assigned to live with his grandparents. The grandmother was at work while the grandfather watched the child. The child apparently got up from a nap and walked out of the house and to the park on his own. The house is several hundred yards from the city park.

CPS has placed the child with another relative while the investigation is ongoing. Once the investigation is complete by the Early Police Department and CPS, the case will be presented to the District Attorney for any further decisions about the outcome of those involved.
