Written by Amanda Coers – Multiple departments responded to a fire at the Camelot Apartment complex in Brownwood on Saturday afternoon just after 3:30 p.m. The official cause of the fire is unknown, reports from witnesses say it was likely a grease fire in the kitchen of apartment 218. All of the residents in the apartments when the fire occurred made it out safely and no injuries have been reported.

The unit housed eight separate apartments, with seven rented. The entire upstairs was engulfed in flames and the downstairs apartments have sustained serious smoke and water damage.

Lesley Boren, one of the residents in the downstairs apartments of the unit, was asleep when concerned neighbors woke her, pounding on her doors and windows, telling her to get out. She quickly grabbed a few items near the door and rushed out to see flames above her apartment.

“Everything upstairs is gone,” says Boren.

Josiah Horton, one of the residents in the upstairs apartments returned home after grocery shopping to see his apartment on fire. Horton is a Howard Payne University student, studying music, and is planning to get married this upcoming summer.

“We’re young, and it could have been worse,” Horton said. “They’re just items.” His apartment, number 220, has been completely destroyed.

Representatives from the Red Cross, as well as the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), were on scene.
