BISD Press Release – Brownwood Intermediate School (BIS) held its annual 6th Grade Basketball Championship games on Wednesday, February 1, in the Brownwood High School gymnasium.

Two championship games were held, one for the top two boy’s teams and one for the top two girl’s teams.  The girls played first with the “Cheesy Fries” taking on the “Dream Team.”

“It was a great, close game between the Cheesy Fries and the Dream Team,” said BIS Coach, Stefenia Phipps. “Both teams showed great defense and hustle. The Cheesy Fries held their lead to defeat the Dream Team with a score of 11- 9. The high scorer for the game and for the entire season was Natalie Edmonds.”

The 2016-17 Championship team, the Cheesy Fries, included players Autumn Borgia, Baily Burkett, Kylie Chesser, Jesslyn Sliger, Ysairis Estrada, and Natalie Edmonds.

“We are thankful that Coach Hoertz and the varsity girl’s basketball team were able to join the game and help mentor the two teams,” stated Phipps. “We are also thankful for Coach Dalleh and Mrs Lishka who were super star referees for the games. All athletes improved for the season and our future is looking bright.”

For the boys it was “OKC You Later” against the “Broken Backboards.”

“Jason Jackson Jr. was the top scorer for OKC You Later with 9 points,” noted BIS Coach Brandon Brown.  “Isaiah Serrato had 3 points, and Ryder Lancaster and Eli Goodrich both had 2 points. For the Broken Backboards, Kaden Bernal was the leading scorer with 6 points.  Logan Duncan, Aidan Chapleau, and Jaiden Perez all had 4 points and Andrew Boren scored 1 point.”

The Broken Backboards won the game 19-16 and are the 2016-2017 6th grade Boys Basketball Champions.

Playing for the Broken Backboards were Kaden Bernal, Luke Gray, Aidan Chapleau, Liam McNeese, Ethan Waldrop, Andrew Boren, Isaiah Rodriguez, Antwuan Valencia, Jaiden Perez, Branson Cabiniss, and Logan Duncan.

The OKC You Later team consisted of Case Markham, Jason Jackson Jr., Ryder Lancaster, Eli Goodrich, Isaiah Serrato, Grayson Cox, and Adan Carrillo.

“Due to an injury, Luke Gray, the leading scorer on the year with 88 points could not play for the Broken Backboards, but was there with his team giving them support,” noted Brown. “We would like to thank Coach Hohertz and Coach Dalleh and their basketball teams for their help, support, and for the use of the high school gym.”

Brown also acknowledged the referees. “I would like to thank Derek Storey and Gayla Lishka for their help all year being the referees.”

“This was a great year for all the teams,” said Brown.  “Congratulations to everyone and I wish them all the best in years to come.” Additional photos and video from the event is viewable on the Brownwood ISD website at: www.brownwoodisd.org/6thBBC.
