A Kroger employee displays one of the many “Souper Bowl of Caring” bags available for donation

Written by Amanda Coers – As shoppers check out in Brownwood’s Kroger, they have an opportunity to help their neighbors in need by picking up one of the many paper bags filled with essential food items to be donated to Good Samaritan Ministries‘ Food Bank. The local Kroger store has long participated in the national giving effort, called “Souper Bowl of Caring,” as a play on the upcoming Super Bowl weekend.

Established in 1990, the program, which is heavily active throughout Texas and Louisiana, inspires stores to collect dollars and food in the weeks leading up to the Big Game. Teaming up with local partners, these groups give 100% of donations to local charities, changing the nation’s largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring.

All of the donations collected at Kroger, at 302 N. Main Street in Brownwood, will go to the Good Samaritan Ministries’ Food Pantry, which feeds over 1,000 families and individuals in need right here in Brown County.

To participate, simply pick up one of the prepackaged bags before you check out and include it with your purchase. You can also make a monetary donation, which will benefit the food pantry as well. The Souper Bowl of Caring bags range between $5 and $8, and are filled with meal items to feed a family of four for one day.
