Daddy’s Turn To Laugh

Many times when you read my column, you read where I am trying to hide my face as I laugh at something Kiera has done. More often than not, I leave Aaron holding the bag to be the straight faced one.  Well, the roles were reversed the other night.

Last week, after picking Kiera up from daycare, we had to run errands around town. By the time we were finished, it was too late to make dinner at home so we stopped at a local restaurant.

It had been a long day at work; Aaron and I were both tired. Kiera was tired as well, but she tends to bounce and get wound up when she is tired.

We sat down at a table and quickly decided what we were going to eat and placed our orders. After we received our drinks, I glanced down to see my phone light up with an incoming text.

I picked my phone up and sent a response back. I set my phone back on the table, thinking to myself how nice it was to sit and relax for a minute. I felt the tension from the day began to fade away as I listened to the sounds around me.

Taking a deep breath, I looked up from the table to smile at Kiera. Before I even made eye contact with my sweet, precious, little angel, I heard “THWACK!” and felt a wet blob hit my cheekbone.

I quickly reached up to brush off the offending object. As I made contact with the blob, Kiera dissolved into giggles. That’s when I realized…the blob was a spit wad.  My child had just hit me with a spit wad.

Wiping it off, I glared at her…the same sweet child that I get up in the middle of the night to comfort when she has a bad dream. The same delightful angel that I will watch cartoons with instead of something I would like to watch…the one that I brag on when she is so sweet and considerate to others. Yes…. my little princess. That’s the child that hit me in the face with a spit wad.

My glare did not have any affect on her as she giggled uncontrollably. I turned to look at Aaron who was trying to hide his shock and humor. He quickly rubbed his hand over his moustache as if he was smoothing it down instead of covering the laughter that threatened to erupt. His shoulders began to shake and finally he grabbed a menu and covered his face as he began to quietly laugh.

I shot a glare at him but couldn’t contain my laughter anymore either.

“Where is it?” Kiera asked in between giggles.

Quickly I wrapped the spit wad in a napkin before she could see it. “I have no idea.” I said, smiling innocently. “I have no idea.”

Now, I just have to solve the mystery of who taught her how to make a spit wad.
