bloodmobileUnited Blood Services (UBS) continues to ask all eligible donors to continue to donate blood. Currently, there is just over a 2-day supply for the regular needs of our local hospitals, including Brownwood Regional.

UBS Donor Recruitment Representative Sean Richey explained that the amount of blood on hand is estimated at the regular daily use area hospitals. There is not an adequate supply should a major event occur. Although UBS is currently meeting patient needs, there is a real possibility that patient care could be compromised by this shortage, according to Richey.

“Brownwood area donors have really stepped up to help us meet the need in a way that I have not seen before,” Richey stated.  “A large part of our blood supply is dependent upon donors, including local high schools and colleges. As schools are just now coming back into session, the need is still there.”  He added that anyone interested in sponsoring a blood drive may contact him at 325-656-2641. Also, UBS is a 501c3 charitable organization. Any business wishing to partner with UBS with donations for promotional items may contact Richey as well.

Richey further explained the urgent need for donations, “Since it takes 24 to 36 hours to test and process each donation before it can be released for a patient, blood is being transfused as fast as United Blood Services can provide it to hospitals.  Donors of all types are urgently needed to give blood now.”

Appointments are highly recommended; however, walk-ins are welcome.  Knowing how many to expect helps UBS better serve their donors.  To schedule a blood donation online, go to www.bloodhero.com or call United Blood Services at 877-UBS-HERO (877-827-4376).

Several appointments are available at local drives to be held within the next few weeks.  Make an online appointment today by clicking the link of the blood drive location you wish to attend or visit http://www.unitedbloodservices.org/ for more information.
