The Heart of Texas Brass Quintet, part of the 36th Infantry Division Band based at Camp Mabry in Austin, will perform a patriotic concert in Brownwood Sunday, Sept. 11.

The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre in downtown Brownwood, Lyric Performing Arts Company board president Hank Hunter said. The performance will be free, and open to the public.

Sponsors of the concert are Citizens National Bank, Texas-Clean, and Bill and Nancy King.

“The Heart of Texas Brass Quintet is made up of five brass musicians and one drummer,” spokesman Chris Koenig said. “The quintet regularly performs military ceremonies, civilian concerts and recitals, and educational outreach throughout Texas.

“On Sept. 11, the group will be paying tribute to the 36th Infantry Division and its Camp Bowie roots,” Koenig continued. “The group will play music both written by American composers, and reflective of our American ideals.”

Probable selections include “Americans We,” “The Liberty Bell,” “The Thunderer,” “Amazing Grace,” “Shenandoah” and selections from “West Side Story.”

The entire 36th Infantry Division Band is a three-time recipient of the Col. George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence, and is comprised of nearly 60 members from around the state of Texas.

“The Lone Star Band,” as it is often called, participated in events related to a symposium in Brownwood held in September 2015 commemorating the War Department’s authorization of Camp Bowie on Sept. 19, 1940, and the start of construction Sept. 27, 1940.

The quintet coming to Brownwood performed at the Brown County Museum of History a year ago as the museum opened its exhibit honoring those who served during World War II.
