CurryGeneGene L. Curry, age 69, of Brownwood passed away peacefully Sunday, June 12, 2016, after a 3-year battle with cancer.

Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Victory Life Church with Pastor Stan Roberts officiating. Gene’s wishes were to be cremated; private family interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home.

Gene was born on December 3, 1946, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma to Reese and Thelma (Singleton) Curry. In high school in Nevada, he excelled in track and field and became a state champion pole vaulter. He worked as a butcher for many years alongside his father.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed archery, hunting and fishing in his spare time. Gene became a professional archer and was a pro shooter for Mathews Archery. He won the ASA World Championship in 2002 and 2003 and won dozens of other tournaments over the course of many years. Gene was the first inductee into the ASA Western Region Hall of Fame and was honored as the 2016 Texas ASA Sportsman of the Year. Due to his tireless work with young archers, the Gene Curry Mentor Program has recently begun operation. Over the last several years he worked as a ranch manager and outfitter for Jimmy Mitchell at the Red Oak Ranch in Blanket, Texas and as an outfitter for Bruce Heard at the Independence Ranch in Sibley, Mississippi.

Gene is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brownie Curry of Brownwood; 3 children, Brian Curry of Rancho Cordova, CA, Brett Curry of Austin, and Christy Barnum, of Keller; 8 grandchildren, Megan, Reese, Amanda, Noah, Benjamin, Amber, Quincy, and Jaden; 1 great-grandchild, Tinsley; sister, Judy Kilgore of Blue Eye, MO; and brother, Gary Curry of Spiro, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reese and Thelma Curry; and his brothers, Gerald Curry and Glen Curry.

In lieu of flowers, the family request plants or you may also send a donation to the Charitable Fund for Gene Curry C/O Barry Andre at 8216 Cypress Lake Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

Online condolences are welcome at www.blaylockfuneralhome.com.
