Woodland Heights Elementary celebrated Cinco de Mayo, Thursday, May 5th. This is the fifth year Woodland Heights has recognized the celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions.

“Students were able to explore the Mexican culture and heritage in a variety of ways,” stated Woodland Heights Elementary teacher, Nereida Ceniceros, noting the different areas of the school that were set up for the event. “As students entered for breakfast, the cafeteria was filled with the sound of Norteño music.”

Ceniceros continued, “In the ‘Restaurante’ they were able to taste a variety of Mexican dishes including enchiladas, burritos, taquitos, rice, beans, buñuelos, guacamole, salsa, pan dulce and aguas de melon and mango to drink.”

The events of the day also included learning music and dance. “En el Salon de Baile, students were taught a Mexican traditional dance, EL Jarabe Tapatio,” noted Ciniceros. “They also learned that a mix between German and Mexican cultures made Conjuncto music.”

Several stations were also set up in the school’s gymnasium. “In the ‘Mercado’ they did several activities that included story-telling and an artifact demonstration in Spanish by Mrs. Kimery, our very own librarian,” stated Ceniceros.  “Students also made maracas, tissue paper flowers, viewed a variety of piñatas, and enjoyed a piece of Mexican candy.”

Ceniceros also recognized the help received from student volunteers. “All the volunteers in the Mercado where high school students,” noted Ceniceros. “They did a fantastic job.”

In addition, several individuals and organizations contributed to make the event a success including donations from Hidalgos in Bangs, Mi Familia, United, and Brookshires. “Parent volunteers and donations made this event possible,” acknowledged Ceniceros.
