In a recent study, researchers found that when children who have suffered loss are surrounded by peer support of others who have also experienced loss, they feel accepted as they are and are able to gain new friendships grounded by their shared experiences that produces hope. Every summer, Hendrick Hospice Care’s Camp Courage offers that type of peer support to enable children to truly heal and gain hope for their future.?
“Camp Courage provides the opportunity for children and teens to come together who have experienced similar life experiences,” said Aimee Colley, special projects coordinator at Hendrick Hospice Care. “Loss can feel very isolating and children have the unique ability to feel like they are the only ones who have been through what they have. Camp Courage allows them to feel normal, to know they are not alone in their grief and that they can overcome and do great things.”
The four-day, three-night camp offers children typical recreational camp activities, as well as grief activities to build self-confidence, trust and understanding of their grief experience. The supportive environment works to give children an outlet for unexpressed emotions, develop coping skills and provides connections with other children who have suffered similar losses.
Camp Courage is held at Big Country Baptist Encampment in Leuders, Texas, May 31 – June 3, 2106, and is available to children, third grade through 12th grade (must have completed second grade), who are dealing with loss due to a death, divorce, or other painful transition. A $10 application fee per camper is required.
