HPURequiemPosterThe Howard Payne University Concert Choir and University Singers will present a concert Tuesday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church Brownwood. The concert is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The program, titled “Requiem,” is written by Sir John Rutter who is one of Britain’s foremost composers of our day. A requiem uses additional elements within the context of the Ordinary of the Roman Catholic Mass and makes use of Latin texts. Rutter not only uses the Latin texts but also uses English texts to create his interpretation of “Requiem,” which is infused with depth and elegance while being quite simple.

Dr. Gregory Church, associate professor of music, will conduct the performance which will feature the combined choirs of the HPU Concert Choir and University Singers. One of the most well-known movements in the concert is “The Lord is My Shepherd” which will feature Stephen Goacher, professor of music, playing oboe. Dr. Allen Reed, retired professor of music, will accompany the performance on the organ and Dr. Celeste Church, dean of institutional research and effectiveness and associate professor of music, will be featured as the soprano soloist.

For more information, contact HPU’s School of Music and Fine Arts at (325) 649-8500.

Applications are still being accepted for the fall 2016 semester at Howard Payne University. HPU offers a variety of financial aid options including the Heart of Texas Scholarship, which awards $60,000 to students from Brown County and surrounding counties. For more information about HPU, contact HPU’s Office of Admission at (325) 649-8020 or by e-mail at enroll@hputx.edu.
