LittleLionsOlympics2016The Brownwood Independent School District will be hosting the 5th Annual Little Lion Olympics for all 3rd graders on May 17, 2016 and all 4th and 5th graders on May 18, 2016 at Gordon Wood Stadium.

This event will give approximately 750 students an opportunity to participate in a junior track meet and help prepare them for their athletic career. The track meet will be centered on the “Olympics” and feature events such as the javelin throw, long jump, the strong man tug-of-war, and various running events including relays. The opening ceremony will begin with each team carrying their original flag and will include many of the Olympic Opening Ceremony traditions.

“An event this size requires a lot of team work and support. All schools, (Brownwood Intermediate, Coggin Elementary, Woodland Heights, East, and Northwest) have to work closely together to get students and teachers organized,” said Brownwood Intermediate Coach Stefenia Phipps in a release announcing the event. “All PE teachers and principals prepare students for their events and for all of the festivities of the day.”

“The support staff at each school is invaluable for sending out communication to teachers and students,” noted Phipps. “The S.H.A.C. (School Health Advisory Committee) members do a great job at generating ideas to make Little Lion Olympics bigger and better each year.”

Phipps continued, “Community support is so important. We would also like to thank our parent volunteers and Jr. High and High School coaches who help make the day of the track meet a success.”

“The Little Lion Olympics will prepare students to become future athletes, get involved in activities to stay healthy, know the importance of teamwork, and learn about Olympic traditions,” Phipps explained. “The benefits of track and field are endless. The more students we can get excited about track and field at an early age the more it will benefit all Brownwood programs.”
