TSTC and 3M representatives held a check presentation Tuesday morning to recognize a $262,809 Skills Development Fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to TSTC, 3M Manufacturing of Brownwood and Domtar Personal Care of Waco.

3M employees began their first day of training Tuesday, April 5, with eight students participating in a drive systems course. Classes are scheduled to train employees on Programmable Logic Controllers, and Advanced Motor Controls later this year.

TSTC’s Executive Director of Workforce Development, John Dosher, said the grant was designed by the Texas Workforce Commission to deliver job skill training specifically targeting the technology sector.

“It allows workers to further their skills so that companies like 3M will run more efficiently and have less down time, which translates to greater profitability for the company,” Dosher said.

This grant will be used to provide customized training to 145 new and incumbent workers for industry-related topics with focused instruction on advanced motor controls, laser and radiation maintenance, electrical and plant engineering systems and quality control.

3M trainees will include electrical and industrial technicians, mechanics and systems technicians. This training will offer 3M’s Plant Engineering multi-craft technicians to improve and further hone their technical industrial maintenance skills, which will also better prepare them for future advancement opportunities, as openings present themselves.
