Scott_CloughFBThe Howard Payne University athletic department recently announced the hiring of Scott Clough as offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jacket football program.

Scott Clough will serve as the Jackets offensive coordinator under new head football coach Hunter Sims. Coach Clough brings significant coaching experience to the Howard Payne staff having worked at every level of college football.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Clough on our coaching staff,” said Hunter Sims, HPU head football coach. “He brings a wealth of experience and football intelligence to our program. We are looking forward to his leadership in directing the offense for Team 111. He is a man who is invested in the lives of student-athletes and pushes them to become great men.”

Clough comes to Howard Payne from NCAA D-III Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia where he was the offensive coordinator from 2014-2015.

Before Southern Virginia, he served three years at NAIA Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Clough was at NCAA D-II Angelo State University as associate head coach and offensive coordinator from 2005-2011.

Clough also had coached at Tyler Junior College, where he served as the Apaches’ offensive coordinator from 1999-2004.  His offense helped lead Tyler to the 2001 conference title, four runner-up finishes and five bowl game appearances.

Throughout his coaching career, Clough has trained players at almost every position and at nearly every level.  He served as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and special teams coach at NCAA D-II Midwestern State University from 1995-98, assistant coach at Mesa State College from 1991-94, and assistant coach for quarterbacks, receivers, tackles and tight ends at the NCAA D-I University of Northern Colorado from 1988-90.

On the defensive side of the ball, Clough coached linebackers and defensive backs.  He also tutored running backs as a volunteer graduate assistant and then full-time assistant at NCAA D-I Colorado State University from 1983-88.

As a player, Clough was at Colorado State University, where he earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference laurels in 1982.  A three-time WAC Scholar-Athlete designee, he was also nominated for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship after his career concluded at CSU.

Clough earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State in 1983 and his master’s degree in exercise physiology from CSU in 1990.

He and his wife, Janet, have two children, Susie and D.J.
