Multiple train cars derailed Monday night under the Truman Harlow Overpass at the south side of the Howard Payne University campus.

According to Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston, 6 train cars derailed in the incident shortly before 8 PM.  Four of the cars were turned on their sides in the derailment while 2 of the cars remained upright.  The overturned cars were carrying silica sand while one tanker car was carrying molasses, according to Preston.   He said that there were no hazardous materials involved and there is no threat to Howard Payne University. No evacuations will be needed.

One of the overturned cars crushed some switching equipment during the incident.

Preston said that the BNSF train was 82 cars long.  A BNSF crew is en route to assess the scene and upright the overturned cars.  Preston said that roads around the area will likely be closed through tomorrow while the scene is cleared.

No injuries were reported in the incident.  The Brownwood Fire Department, Brownwood Police Department, and Howard Payne University Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.
