I Want to Do Nothing…And That’s Ok

I was talking with my girlfriend the other day, and we remarked on how absolutely busy our schedules had become. She said that she would like a day where we did nothing but sleep late, watch movies, and eat only lunch and dinner, because those were the only meals we were awake for!

Sounds like a great plan to me!

My schedule has gotten crazy over the next month or so. With Steel Magnolias opening in a matter of days, which I am doing the sound for, and HPU games and weddings, I am crazy busy on top of having a full time job at the school! Did I let that happen, or make it happen?

A bit of both, I think.

I have been DJ-ing weddings in this area for the better part of six years now, and really enjoy it. I am on my third season as in stadium announcer for Howard Payne Football, and have really taken ownership of the soundboard at the Lyric lately.

I enjoy doing all those things, it just so happens that they all are around the same time this month. Seriously, I have the play this weekend and next, next Saturday I have the HPU home game and a wedding, so I have to have a fill in for Saturday night at the Lyric! When I say at the same time, I mean so literally!

What is the cost and benefit of this activity? Well the benefit is simple, I enjoy what I’m doing and I make money doing them. The cost? That’s different. Sure, I have had to invest in equipment for the DJ stuff, and it costs me gas and food money doing the other stuff, but that’s not quite what I’m getting at. It costs my time, but I’m not the one who pays it. My daughter and my girlfriend pay that cost for me.

So, I am going to find time to do nothing, with both of them and each of them individually. I am going to schedule a day of rest and relaxation. We ain’t gonna do nuthin!

(Hey, it worked for the almighty, and I’m pretty sure He knows what He’s doing!)

We might go for a drive, rent a bunch of movies, or stay up late making cookies or some other bad for you treat, but we are going to do it together. And that’s the point.

Ben Cox is a man of many parts. A frequent fixture of the Lyric Theater stage, the in stadium voice of the Howard Payne Yellowjackets, educator, mobile DJ, drummer, father, boyfriend, avid tv watcher, and has been known to be a teller of Dad-jokes.
