BHS_FCCLA_Natl2015RusselTorresBrownwood High School students Pamela Russell and Liliana Torres competed in STAR events at the National Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Conference in Washington D.C., July 5th through 9th.

In order to reach the national level, students must compete in STAR events at the regional and state levels. STAR events are individual and group competitions in various categories on topics related to Family and Consumer Science.

Brownwood High School received a bronze medal at the national level in Nutrition and Wellness. Students chose the topic of energy drinks and completed research on the subject.  Students then applied their research to their own lives and presented their findings to a panel of three judges using visual aids and written information.

BHS FCCLA Sponsors, Connie Sliger and Mitzi Cockerham, also attended the conference and now have their sights set on another trip to the next National FCCLA conference in San Diego in July 2016.

Brownwood High School FCCLA sponsors noted that they appreciate the support of students’ parents, campus administrators, district administrators, and the Brownwood ISD school board, and that without the support, students would not have achieved national recognition through FCCLA.
