SmithDanaDana Smith, 67, of Brownwood passed away peacefully, at home, the morning of Friday, July 17, 2015, after a brave battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30pm Friday, July 24, at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center, 600 East Depot, in Brownwood.

Dana was born on July 17, 1948, in Brownwood, Texas to Juanelle and Marion Smith. He was a graduate of Southwestern Adventist University and received his J.D. from Baylor Law School.

Dana practiced law for well over 40 years, and left a legacy of kindness and compassion that his family is most proud of. It has been said that Dana did not only gain clients, he gained friends. Dana enjoyed playing golf, traveling the country for sporting events, watching baseball, and spending time with his family and friends.

Dana is survived by his children, Blake Smith of Los Angeles, CA; Paige Brum, and her husband, Aaron, of Austin, his father, Marion Smith, of Brownwood; his brother, Damon Smith, and wife Debbi, of Brownwood; nieces Tara Hendrick of Highland Village and Ashley Moore of Southlake.

Dana was preceded in death by his mother, Juanelle Smith.

The family would like to thank the community of Brownwood at large for their support and kindness during Dana’s illness; Dr. David Morales; Dr. Stanley Appel and his ALS Team at Houston Methodist Hospital; and his unwavering caregivers.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to ALS research foundation, Augie’s Quest, augiesquest.als.net, or 617-441-7268. The family also requests that favorite memories of Dana be sent to his children at danasmithmemories@gmail.com or left on Dana’s permanent online memorial at heartlandfuneralhome.net.
