TxDotlogoTraffic is being diverted around US 67/84 and other areas of Brownwood and Early as the Pecan Bayou floods.

Several teams of TxDOT personnel are stationed at barricades throughout town, helping motorists make it around the flooding safely. Message signs are also in place at key locations to advise motorists of the closures.

Currently, closures include:

  • US 67/84 at the Pecan Bayou
  • Riverside Park Drive
  • Marketplace Road
  • FM 2525 or Williams Ranch Road

Additional closures can be found at www.drivetexas.org. Motorists are being asked to detour to the south around Brownwood using FM 45 and FM 2126. Those needing to travel north can use FM 279 from the west or US 183 from the east.

Crews will remain in place until water recedes and roads become passable.

Travel is discouraged in areas that are experiencing flooding. Motorists who must be out should follow these safety tips:

  • If water is covering a road, don’t try to cross. As little as six inches of water can float some vehicles.
  • It is illegal to remove barricades blocking lower water crossings. Penalties can range from $200 to $1,000 and/or two years in jail.
  • Never try to walk, swim or drive through swift water.
  • If your vehicle stalls in deep water, leave it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.
  • Turn around; don’t drown.

Drivers can find updates on roadway conditions and closures at www.drivetexas.org or by calling 1 (800) 452-9292. Updates can also be found on social media at www.twitter.com/bwd and www.facebook.com/txdot.
