TxDotlogoStarting Monday, crews will be replacing several standard traffic signals in Brownwood with signals that include the Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA). Motorists may have already noticed this type of signal in place at the intersection of US 67/84 and Riverside Park Drive.

Currently, intersections are scheduled to receive the new FYA signals in the following order:

  • US 67/84 at Wal-Mart
  • US 377 at Austin Avenue
  • Austin Avenue at Fisk
  • Austin Avenue at Coggin
  • Austin Avenue at Magnolia

During installation of new signals, all traffic signals at the intersection will either be dark or display flashing red lights. Motorists should treat the intersection as a four-way stop until lights are fully operational again.

Once work is completed at the intersections, motorists can expect to see a signal with solid red, yellow, and green arrows in addition to the FYA signal.

These new displays are similar to standard traffic signals.

  • A steady green arrow allows the driver to make a protected left turn
  • A flashing yellow arrow allows the driver to turn left, but alerts the driver to yield to oncoming traffic
  • A steady yellow arrow alerts the driver that the signal is about to turn red and they should prepare to stop or safely complete the turn
  • A steady ready arrow requires the driver to stop

Weather-permitting, work on the traffic signals should be completed by early August 2015.
