LECSmEarly Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle which led to the arrest of one on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest, according to EPD Chief David Mercer.

According to the report, on Early PD officer attempted the stop on a gray 2014 Toyota Venza for speeding on Lucas Drive.  When the officer initiated a traffic stop, the vehicle sped up in an attempt to elude the officer, Mercer stated.  The vehicle went through several residential neighborhoods before parking behind a house on Yucca Tree Drive, according to Mercer’s report.

The officer pulled in behind the vehicle and learned the driver had made his way under the house, according to the report. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 29-year-old Jeffery Dewayne Whitehead of Early, did not live at the residence but did know the occupants, Mercer said. Other officers arrived from Early Police Department and Brown County Sheriff’s Office and began removing the siding at different spots around the house so that they could see Whitehead, Mercer reported.   Whitehead then surrendered and came out from under the house, according to the report.  He was taken into custody and charged with evading arrest in a vehicle.

The vehicle had Idaho license plates and after further investigation it was learned the vehicle had been reported stolen that morning to Casper Police Department in Wyoming but had not been entered as a stolen vehicle at that time, Mercer explained.   Whitehead was then additionally charged with unauthorized use of motor vehicle.
