More than 50 students and employees from Howard Payne University joined the volunteers at Tuesday’s Empty Bowls fundraiser hosted by Good Samaritan Ministries of Brownwood.

For a $10 donation, guests received a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a meal of soup and water. HPU volunteers were among those ladling soup and assisting the diners.

The project raised $19,000 all of which will be used to fight hunger. Ninety percent of the funds will stay in Brown County, while 10 percent will be tithed to an organization that fights hunger internationally.

Dan Humeniuk, assistant professor of social work and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work and Sociology, coordinated the volunteers.

“We’re very fortunate to have organizations such as Good Samaritan Ministries in our community,” he said. “The staff of that organization does excellent work in fighting hunger in Brownwood. I was proud to be a part of the Empty Bowls project.”
