Off Mic With Ben Cox: A Moment in the Life

bencox2I often talk about my personal life on the air, and in this column. It makes for some interesting conversations.

It also makes for decisions when it comes time to writing and talking.

Do I say exactly what has happened and risk upsetting someone, or skirt the issue and try to play coy with my descriptions?

I think this week, I’ll just lay it bare and let the cards fall where they may.

I broke up with the woman I had been seeing for a few months recently, as she and I realized that the distance between us was too great an obstacle to overcome. I regretted that decision as soon as I made it, but tried to “be the man” about it and stand by my decision.

I caved this weekend. I tried to get her back, but she was apparently more steadfast in her resolve than I was, and while I wouldn’t say I was rebuffed, she let it be made clear that what we had was over, despite any remaining feelings for me.

Lemme tell you, that really sucked. It hurt, but I can imagine it hurt for her too. And I don’t blame her.

Not at all. It takes a lot of strength to stand by a decision like that when someone is pleading to reverse course. (Yeah, pleading. It happened)

I guess you could say I am writing this column, and letting you in on my little drama as a bit of catharsis, a kind of “open book journaling” if you will.

This isn’t me moping, nor is it a “Woe is me, everyone please pay attention to me” kind of piece. And if it reads as such, you have my apologies.

I simply needed to write this. Just to work through it in my head, and on paper. (OK, a screen as this is an online column)

Thanks for reading, next week should be a bit lighter. (At least, I certainly hope so!)
