Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate Students Place in Abilene Chess Tournament

Eight students from Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate competed against players up to 12th grade at the 18th annual Abilene Scholastic Chess Tournament on February 14th, 2015.

Seth Oines, a 5th grade student at Brownwood Intermediate School, placed 3rd overall out of 68 players with a 4-0-1 record and was ranked first in the elementary division.  Andrew Boren, Luke Gray, and Cameron Phipps placed in the top 10 overall and were tied for 2nd in the elementary division with 4-1 records.

Students that competed at the tournament included Brownwood Intermediate School 5th graders, Seth Oines, Cameron Phipps, and Weston Burns, and Coggin Elementary 4th graders, Andrew Boren, Eli Goodrich, Luke Gray, Campbell Gilmore, and Chris Robinson.

Earlier this year the 4th and 5th grade UIL chess teams took first in their respective grades in the Chess Puzzle competition at the district UIL meet. The 4th grade team for the UIL competition included Campbell Gilmore, Eli Goodrich, and Andrew Boren, and the 5th grade team consisted of Weston Burns, Cameron Phipps, and Seth Oines.
