Over 120 art pieces representing over 50 different local artists have been submitted to the annual Salon des Refusés Exhibit held by the Brownwood Art Association in cooperation with the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit.

“This is the biggest Salon show we’ve had,” said Tommy Munster, Brownwood Art Association President. “There are some really great art pieces. There’s a huge variety of media: photography, sculptures, and paintings. There’s a great mixture of contemporary and modern art.”

Pieces by local artists entered but not accepted into the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit will be displayed in the Brownwood Art Association’s Salon des Refusés February 8th-20th. The gallery will be open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Art Center located at 215 Fisk Street in downtown Brownwood. Each piece will be available to purchase with prices set by the artists.

A special reception for the exhibit will be held on Thursday, February 12th, from 5-8 p.m. in the Art Center. Contact the Brownwood Art Association by phone (325) 641-2916 or email [email protected].

The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit itself will be open to the public February 8th through 20th at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center in Brownwood beginning with the opening reception on February 7th.

The Salon des Refusés, French for “exhibition of rejects,” is generally an exhibition of works rejected from a juried art show. This famous tradition originally began with French Emperor Napoleon III in 1863 after a public outcry from artists and their family and friends when notable works of art were not accepted into The Paris Salon, sponsored by the French government and the Academy of Fine Arts. Today the tradition is honored worldwide by numerous juried art exhibits.
