Organizers are getting set to host the 17th Annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit February 8-20, 2015 and encourage artists to prepare for the call for entries on January 30 & 31st at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center.

This year’s juror will be Daryl Howard of the Austin area.  Howard is a native Texan who is represented internationally and exhibits nationally.  She is inspired by Native American philosophy and design as well as her travels which take her from Arizona and New Mexico to Indonesia, Europe, Mexico, Greece, China, Japan and Egypt.

After receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University, Daryl lived and taught art at an overseas school in Tokyo, Japan in the 1970s.  During this time, Howard was introduced to a private collection of 18th and 19th century Ukiyo-e woodcuts by Claude Holman, who became a mentor and a friend.  Daryl embarked on an apprenticeship with Hodaka Yoshida, a Japanese printmaker and by the time she left Japan she had become proficient in the medium, well on her way to perfecting the painstaking demands of carving and printing.  Returning to graduate school in 1976 at the University of Texas at Austin, she began her experience with a second medium, mixed media collage.

The exhibit itself will open to the public February 8th through 20th at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center in Brownwood.

The Salon des Refusés will open once again to artists to display their works that do not make the 2015 Stars of Texas Exhibit and will be held at the Art Center which is located at 215 Fisk Avenue.  The Salon des Refusés will also be open from February 8th through 20th.
