BPDpatchSmallThe Brownwood Police Department reminds the public to be on the alert for possible phone scams and issued the following information:

On Thursday, December 18, 2014, the Brownwood Police Department began receiving citizen complaints of a phone scam targeting the community.

The scammers are reported to be phoning citizens; claiming that they owe money to the government (IRS) due to back taxes.  The scammers state that a warrant has been issued for the citizen’s arrest but it can be voided by paying a fine within hours of the call.  Citizens are then instructed to purchase prepaid credit cards for a certain amount and to transfer the money to another source.

“Local law enforcement agencies would like to remind everyone to be weary of phone solicitors.  Question any phone call where money is expected to be transferred or where people ask for your financial/personal information,” warned Brownwood Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller.  “Avoid giving out any information to anyone whom you do not know.  If you have any doubts as to the legitimacy of a transaction end the phone call and contact family or friends; seeking a second opinion on the matter.”

Brownwood Police Department officials state, “Be safe this holiday season and have a Merry Christmas.”
