The Lyric Performing Arts Company celebrated the completion of the 100-year-old Lyric theatre’s recent renovation after being closed for 56 years. The renovation took over 13 years to raise the funds and complete the project, according to LPAC Managing Director Eric Evans.
Over 200 supporters of the Lyric came to enjoy a VIP night on Thursday, complete with valet parking, hors d’oeuvres, souvenir photos, and were treated to the first musical performance in the renovated theatre, “Anything Goes.”
The first presentation of the evening was from the Brownwood Mafia when Robert Porter presented a framed honorary membership certificate to the Lyric Performing Arts Company. Porter stated that membership is exclusive and that the Lyric and its supporters are in the ranks of notable people as Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush, Bob Hope, Billy Graham, and Paul Harvey.
Master of Ceremonies Rex Tackett welcomed the crowd stating, “The lady looks pretty good for 100,” said Tackett. “It’s good to have her back where she belongs.”
A ribbon cutting with the LPAC board was also held on stage to mark the grand opening.
A video presentation about the history of the theatre and the birth of the renovation project preceded the performance.
Evans explained how the theatre is not only a center for the arts but can be a blessing to the masses.
“I am thrilled to see the Lyric opened and that this community and all of Central Texas will get to experience something that is uncommon for communities like the Brownwood/Brown County area,” he said.
Evans stated that he was proud of the fundraising LPAC was able to accomplish. “I don’t know of any private sector non-profit that has raised $3.2 million for a project that has such an economic impact. It certainly contributes to the quality of life, if you look at the layering of potential of things like the Lyric, the opportunities become vast and exciting.”
Contributing to the success of the project were many generous donors and supporters through both financial gift and volunteer hours. Thursday night’s gala included volunteers of 42 cast members, 10 orchestra members (all from Brownwood), and 25 other volunteers that gave of their professional services or through giving of their time and abilities, according to Evans.
