The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Centennial Celebration on Monday, December 15th for the Brownwood Harvey House with a series of special events planned throughout the day.

“We are excited to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Harvey House in Brownwood on December 15th,” said Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ray Tipton.  “The building which sits next to the Depot was originally part of a chain of restaurants owned by the Fred Harvey Company.  The building now houses the Brownwood Chamber offices and the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions Museum.”

The celebration day will feature tours of the building, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and statue, a book signing and a  showing of the documentary “Harvey Girls:  Opportunity Bound” at the Lyric Theatre.   The Turtle Restaurant in downtown Brownwood will also be offering a Harvey House menu during lunch and dinner.

“We also have at least two Harvey Girls, who were waitresses of the time, scheduled to attend the event,” Tipton said.  “These Harvey Girls worked in the Brownwood Harvey House during World War II.”

For more information about the event contact the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce at 325-646-9535.
