I was talking to someone the other day and said that I’d love to go to the mountains and just enjoy the solitude and the snow. And as happens, we both emphatically said that we were going to just drop everything and go.

We were both joking, but there was some seriousness underlying all the comments made.

And of course, that set my mind to wondering. As it does.

What would happen if we actually made good on those kinds of statements?

For me, I always say I want to go to Colorado and live among the mountains and enjoy the change of seasons. (This was first said long before any legislation changes, mind you)

So, what would that mean for me?

Well, I’d have to invest in a LOT of winter clothes, hats mostly.

I’d need a four wheel drive vehicle, and probably a summer vehicle for when the gas guzzler wasn’t needed.

I’d want a traditional cabin, you know, logs and the brick fireplace and so forth.

What does all this take? Money. What do I lack most of all? Money.

Guess that answers the second question my mind came up with, WHY don’t we make good on those kinds of statements?

My mother loved the phrase “Champagne taste and a Beer budget,” it was how she described my desires and ability to fulfill them as a kid. (Yeah, it was a borrowed phrase, but it still applies.) Apparently I’ve done little to move forward with my ability to fulfill those grandiose desires. However my ambition is still ever growing and expanding.

It’s no longer just nice guitars, (those still hold sway in my head!) but now it’s vacations and vehicles, and a house, and so forth.

But it’s still nice to dream big, isn’t it? It’s a kind of release valve for the soul.

The phrase “One Day…” can get you through almost any circumstance, can’t it? Kinda magical how those two little words can bring hope to our lives.

Just do yourself a favor, when “One Day” becomes “Today”, act on those dreams and treat yourself. Do it big. Get the larger bed in the hotel suite, pay for the extra amenities at the resort.

Do it for your younger self who dreamed of those places.

And for the rest of us poor saps who have yet to make it there!
