Flu season is approaching, and now is the time to be thinking about getting your yearly flu vaccine. The Brownwood/Brown County Health Department will be hosting a community-wide flu clinic on October 9th and 10th from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm.
The cost of adult flu shots will be $25.00 or can be filed on Medicare part B. The individual will need to bring their Medicare card with them to the clinic. Children’s flu shots will also be available. Children’s Medicaid will be accepted. For children on CHIPS, the cost of the vaccine is the copay amount shown on the insurance card. For uninsured children the cost of the vaccine is $15.00. For children with insurance the cost of the vaccine is $25.00. A form with the required insurance coding can be provided to individuals if they wish to file on their insurance for reimbursement of the cost of the vaccine.
Influenza (the “flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is spread by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, and runny/stuffy nose. The flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to hospitalization and can in some cases be fatal. Some people, such as the elderly, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious complications from the flu. These complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections. Pregnant women are also at risk of having serious complications from the flu. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months and older should be vaccinated against the flu.
