Latch Key students are participating in the Girl Scouts Program free of charge, thanks to the volunteer work of Nancy King, customized program specialist, and Stephanie Upfold, assistant troop leader.  These two ladies recently volunteered their time at the Latch Key Program on Wednesday, September 17th.

The Girl Scouts program strives to “build girls of courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place,” stated King.

The girl scouts use the book The Journey to earn their badges. The volunteers provide programs to teach self-confidence, anti-bullying, and safety.

The Girl Scout Latch Key troop, which is only for girls in the Latch Key program, will continue meeting at 4 p.m. every Wednesday.

Founded in 1983, the Pearl Griffin Memorial Latch Key Program is located at 2411 Coggin Avenue in the First Christian Church in Brownwood, Texas.  The program serves children (Pre-K through 6th grade) who qualify from low income families to have after school care so that the children are not left home alone.

Each year, approximately 80 children are served in Brownwood by Latch Key.  First Christian Church donates the classroom space and Howard Payne students help as teachers fulfilling two needs, a low cost staff for Latch Key and a job through the Work Study Program for the HPU students.  Latch Key is a United Way Organization.

For more information about the Latch Key Program call Jessica Hardy at 646-2138.
