September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and the Brownwood Lions as well as the Lionettes, Cheerleaders, and Crew will be honoring local cancer survivors by hosting a “Go Gold” game.

There will be a ceremony to recognize local childhood cancer survivors and angels during the student council gift exchange which is expected to be held at approximately 6:55 p.m.

“It is so special to have student leaders step up to raise awareness and support for local childhood cancer warriors and their families during National Childhood Cancer Awareness month,” said BHS CTE Director and BMS Assistant Principal, Sandra Richardson. “It helps to educate the public about the reality of childhood cancer in our local community, as well as the fact that it is not rare—cancer does not discriminate by age, race, or geographic location.”

“Childhood cancers are different and distinct from adult cancers, and the way children’s bodies handle treatment are also very different from adults,” noted Richardson. “Most importantly, this game recognizes how special our local cancer warriors and their families are. It means even more to the families who have lost their loved one and been through so much heartbreak to know that their child has not been forgotten. As a parent of a childhood cancer survivor, I can say from my heart that it is wonderful to live in a community that has embraced Carlee throughout her journey. Our prayer is that no other family will face this terrible disease, but if and when it happens, they will know there are other families in Brown County who have been through this and who will be there to walk that journey with them every step of the way.”
