Two popular events traditionally held at different times during the Brownwood Reunion will be combined for the 2014 celebration.

The “Honor a Hero” parade will be integrated with the “Feels Like Home” grand parade. Parade organizer Rick Phelps said this decision was made in an effort to spotlight local heroes.

“We are blessed in this community to be surrounded by everyday heroes,” Phelps said. “This is one simple way we can honor those currently serving in the military as well as those veterans who have served in the past. And of course our EMTs, law enforcement and firefighters deserve recognition.”

Family members are also being encouraged to take part in the parade.

“All of these folks that have served our community and continue to do so have strong support systems and we want to honor them as well,” Phelps said. Family members are encouraged to bring posters, T-shirts and signs.

Those who have previously taken part in the “Honor a Hero” parade will not need to register, but are asked to call or send a text message to Phelps at 325-200-1276. “It will help me out to know how many plan on walking in the parade so that I can have all of the heroes grouped together that morning,” Phelps said. “They will be leading the parade and I don’t want anyone to be left behind.”

All other entrants in the parade will need to visit www.celebratebrownwood.com and register. The parade will kick off at 10 a.m., September 20. Lineup for the parade will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the tent near Trans Texas Tire. The fee to enter the parade is $15 if registration is completed by September 9. After that date, the fee will be $25.

Phelps said safety is the number one priority during the parade.

“Participants are encouraged to throw candy to those who are watching the parade,” Phelps said. “It is important to remember that candy should not be thrown directly from vehicles or floats. If you plan on tossing candy, please ensure you have someone walking along side your float doing that. The kids have a tendency to dart out in the street for candy and we don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

This year’s Brownwood Reunion Celebration will be held September 19, 20, and 21.  The community-wide festival features a variety of contests, events, attractions, music, and food in addition to the main concerts.
