A head-on collision north of Brady resulted in 3 deaths and left 5 others injured late Tuesday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials state the investigation of the accident is ongoing; however some details were released Wednesday morning.

According to Trooper Eckert of Brady, a family of six from Brady were traveling south on N Hwy 377 in a Chevy Suburban when a blue Dodge pickup crossed the center lane.  It appeared that the driver of the pickup attempted to get back into the northbound lane and that the vehicles collided head-on at center stripe, reported Eckert.  The accident scene was reported to be 12 miles north of Brady.

The driver of the Suburban, a female in her early 20s, died as a result of the impact.  A toddler also was reported to have passed away at the time of the crash.  A male passenger (also in his 20s) and three young children were transported to hospitals for treatment of their injuries, which were severe according to DPS officials.  One of the children transported later died at the hospital, DPS confirmed.

Occupants of the Dodge pickup were said to be two males in their early 20s possibly from Brownwood; however, their addresses had not yet been confirmed as current according to Trooper Eckert.  Both of these men were reported to be in critical condition, Trooper Eckert reported.

Hospitals receiving patients included Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Cooks Children’s Hospital in Dallas, and Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.  At least two patients were transported by air, according to DPS officials.

Trooper Eckert stated that the cause of the accident is still under investigation and names of the injured and deceased were not being released at this time.

“Due to the nature of the injuries and the number of people involved, we are still trying to learn of their conditions, which have not been released by the hospitals involved due to HIPA laws,” said Eckert who explained that family members were relaying the status of the injured.

Eckert explained that the speed of the accident had not yet been determined but that it was “a severe high speed impact,” that the accident occurred in a passing zone on a straight away, and that the weather was not a factor.
