Howard Payne University’s Concert Choir will present its spring concert next Tuesday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Grace Chapel, located inside the Paul and Jane Meyer Faith and Life Leadership Center on the HPU campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Students will present music from the 16th century to the present time, including two hymn arrangements, two settings of “O Magnum Mysterium” and two settings of Psalm 100 (“O Be Joyful”). In addition, two works of Jackson Berkey, co-founder of Mannheim Steamroller, will be performed: “View Me, Lord, A Work of Thine,” a setting of the English composer and poet Thomas Campsion; and “Certain Am I,” a setting of Emily Dickinson’s well-known poem “I Never Saw a Moor.” Accompanists for the program are HPU professors of music Dr. Allen Reed, organ, and Dr. Elizabeth Wallace, piano.

The Concert Choir is conducted by Dr. Monte Garrett, professor of music and director of choral activities, who joined the HPU faculty in 2001. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting at The University of Texas at Austin. His conducting teachers include Dr. Loyd Hawthorne, Dr. David Keith and Dr. James Morrow. He has participated in conducting master classes with Dr. Ken Fulton (Louisiana State University), Dr. Joshua Habermann (Dallas Symphony Chorus) and Jon Washburn (Vancouver Chamber Choir).

For more information about the production, contact HPU’s School of Music and Fine Arts at (325) 649-8500.
