The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

CoinCollectingFor Brownwood coin collectors, it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

You might ask, “You mean it’s Christmas time again?”

No, for the local coin geeks, it’s time for the Fifth Annual Brown County Coin Show!

Our show will be held on Friday, February 14, from noon to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, February 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It will be at Heartland Mall in Early, in the former Beall’s store which is in the center of the mall. Admission is free.

This event is not a big fundraiser for the club; it is held for the benefit of community members, interested local folks, and to promote the hobby of coin collecting. We have professional and hobby dealers from at least two states who will be setting up and offering their wares to you.  Several will also buy your coins, and others will have gold and silver bullion for sale.  Last year we had one dealer whose wife sold vintage jewelry. . . she cost me a hundred bucks because my wife came and browsed!

We will have about 25 dealers at our show.  Most are from out of town, and a few are local collectors who will be selling some of their treasures.  I will have a table and hope to sell a few supplies, a few coins, and maybe a metal detector or two.  I would love to see your coins and help you place a value on them!

As I write this, silver melt value is $19.83 an ounce.  That means pre-1965 dimes contain $1.44 in silver value; quarters, $3.58; and half dollars, $7.17!  It might be time for you to clean out your sock drawer and cash in on those old quarters you put back years ago!

The Central Texas Treasure Hunters Club will have a display for anyone who might want to learn more about metal detecting.

The club will also conduct a raffle.  There will be three winners.  Prizes are a 1/10 gold American eagle and two one ounce American silver eagles.  Those tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5.  Winners need not be present to win.

The ANACS coin certification representative will accept coin submissions for grading and authentication.  Submitting coins at the show will save your shipping costs to them.  Their rep will also provide free opinions on your coins’ grades and condition.

We will have armed security, so you can feel safe in bringing coins to sell, to trade, or to have appraised, or to browse the coins, bullion, and other collectibles.

And, don’t forget—coin collecting is a fascinating (and sometimes profitable) hobby. Learn more about it at one of our meetings.  Visit the Brown County Coin Club on the second Tuesday of each month, at 6:30 pm, at Principally Coins and Metal Detectors, at 3002 Early Blvd, in Early.  Meetings provide a great opportunity to learn all about coin collecting.  We hope to see you on February 11 for our next meeting.  Call Bill Cooper at 325-642-2128 or me at 325-217-4129 for more information.
