sanchezJose R. Sanchez, 89 of Brownwood, died peacefully surrounded by his family on January 12, 2014.  He was born on April 29, 1924 in Villa Union, Coahuila Mexico to Cruz Sanchez and Amelia Rodriguez.  He had been a resident of Brown County since the 1960s.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Paula Castaneda Sanchez.  Sons, Salvador Sanchez and wife Olivia of San Angelo; Jose Francisco Sanchez and wife Micaela of Dallas; and Joe Castaneda and Sonia of Brownwood.  Daughters, Ysenia Romelia Boykin of Dallas/Ft. Worth; Mary Wallace and husband Kerry of Burleson; Patricia Sanchez-Bastardo and husband Pete of Brownwood; and Rose Valencia and husband Bobby of Midland.  The legacy of Jose R. Sanchez continues with 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Juan Carlos (Johnny) Sanchez.

Family and friends will always remember Jose’s mischievous sense of humor and quick wit.  He always had a smile and was quick with a joke/tale that would make his family/friends laugh. He loved being outdoors mowing and doing yard work.  Jose was known for his artistic talent in creating beautiful leather pieces from rawhide leather.  He was often contracted for his “one of a kind” piece, such as bridle, whips, and reins,   His family will always cherish their memories of “Papi” or “Welo” dancing with them around the kitchen table.   In the later part of his life, Jose became a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista and spent many years maintaining the upkeep of the church into his 80’s.   During his last months, he could often be found sitting outside in the back porch in his favorite chair.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Heartland Funeral Home.  Funeral services for Jose will be at Primera Iglesia Bautista on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  Jose will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Cemetery next to his beloved, youngest son.

Condolences can be offered to the family at www.heartlandfuneralhome.net
