UIL2014-2016 University Interscholastic League (UIL) conference cut off numbers as well as division numbers that will be implemented for 2014-2016 were released Monday, December 2nd and Brownwood High School is moving up into 4A Division I according to these numbers.

BISD Deputy Superintendent Kevin Gabree confirmed that official BHS enrollment numbers turned in to UIL was 893.  Enrollment numbers determine the division and conference each school will be classified.  This puts Brownwood into the larger of the two 4A divisions.

This new conference and division was no shock to Brownwood ISD as they were anticipating the Division I 4A status according to BHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Chuck Howard.

“We knew we would be Division I 4-A next year.   It (district realignment) is all speculation at this point.  We could go in any direction.  The UIL has stated that they are attempting to create six teams within each district,” explained Coach Howard.  “The number one goal, according to the UIL, is to create equality within each division based upon school enrollments.  The second factor, of course, is travel.”

Conference 4A will be made up of high schools with populations of 465-1059, divided into Division I and II. These new conference numbers reflect an addition of 6A in Texas high schools.

Early High School reported an enrollment of 342 for the current year according to EISD officials.  Bangs High School reported an enrollment of 329, according to Bangs ISD Superintendent Bill Foster.  These numbers will place both Bangs and Early in Division I 3A.

1A – 4A Football Division I and Division II conferences are divided into the following numbers:

4A Division I:  686 – 1059

4A Division II:  465 -685

3A Division I:  315-464

3A Division II:  220 – 314

2A Division I:  158 – 219

2A Division II:  105 – 157

1A Division II:  55 – 104.9

1A Division I:  54and below

The largest schools in Texas are classified into the following conferences:

6A:  2100 and above

5A:  1060 – 2099

For football divisions, 1A schools “may opt to play in 1A (6-man football) or may opt to play in Conference AA football (eleven-man football) but remain in Conference A for other applicable activities,” according to UIL Conference and District Assignment Policies and Procedures for the 2014-2016 realignment.

Districts are yet to be determined and will be announced in February 2014.
