The City of Brownwood recognized September as Recovery Month in Brownwood at their meeting on Tuesday morning, and Mayor Stephen Haynes presented a proclamation to Dion White of the Center for Life Resources.

According to the proclamation, mental and substance use disorders affect all communities nationwide, but with commitment and support, people with these disorders can achieve healthy lifestyles and lead rewarding lives in recovery.

Haynes stated that the impact of mental and substance use disorders is apparent in the community, and an estimated one thousand people in Brown County are affected by these conditions.

Through Recovery Month, awareness events help more people to recognize the signs of mental and/or substance use disorders, which can lead more people into treatment.

He stated that managing the effects of these conditions can help people achieve healthy lifestyles, both physically and emotionally.

Haynes presented the proclamation to White and encouraged all citizens to spread the message that behavioral health is an essential part of health and one’s overall wellness, and that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover.

White reminded those in attendance of an upcoming event, the Recovery Walk, which is being held in honor of National Recovery Month.  The Center for Life Resources and Winner’s Circle Support Group will host their second annual Recovery Walk and Picnic in the Park from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Coggin Park on Saturday, September 28th.

At the event, there will be the recovery walk, sharing of personal recovery stories, games and activities for kids, and a lunch of hot dogs and drinks.  The public is invited to attend this free event.

Organizers invite the public to mark their calendar for September 28th and join the Center for Life Resources and Winner’s Circle Support Group in encouraging others by sharing their own story.
