National Weather Service Releases Brown County Tornado Assessment from Monday’s Storms

NationalWeatherServiceLogoThe National Weather Service in San Angelo released their assessment of the three tornadoes that touched down in Brown County on Monday, May 20th.

Lake Brownwood Tornado

Start time:             435 PM CDT

Start location:         Lake Brownwood /  TX

Start lat/lon:          31.86 / -99.01

End date:               May 20 2013

End time:               439 PM CDT

End location:           4 miles Northwest of Owens / TX

End_lat/lon:            31.86 / -98.99

This tornado formed over Lake Brownwood and was briefly on the ground before lifting up as it moved east towards Owens.

Blanket tornado

Rating:                 EF-1

Estimated peak wind:    105 mph

Path length /statute/:  3.5 miles

Path width /maximum/:   350 yards

Fatalities:             0

Injuries:               0

Start time:             541 PM CDT

Start location:         Blanket / TX

Start lat/lon:          31.83 / -98.79

End date:               May 20 2013

End time:               555 PM CDT

End location:           3.5 miles SSE of Blanket / TX

End lat/lon:            31.78 / -98.77

This tornado blew two heavy air conditioning units off of the Blanket High School.  The twister produced roof damage to the gymnasium and a nearby bus barn.  It knocked down trees…power lines and steel fencing.  It also knocked over two tombstones at the nearby cemetery.  The tornado also snapped or uprooted oak trees that were more than 100 years old.

End location:           4.8 NNE Zephyr / TX

This was the last tornado that briefly touched down.
