Woodland Heights celebrated Cinco de Mayo, Friday, May 3rd. This is the second year Woodland Heights has recognized the celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions. “I would like to thank all the parent volunteers for the support we get from them,” said Nereida Ceniceros, a first-grade teacher at Woodland Heights Elementary. “It has allowed us to recognize this as a school-wide celebration.”

Woodland Heights Elementary students enjoyed a variety of food and activities set up at stations that included tortilla-making, music and dance, storytelling, and flower-making.  “Our parents donated all the supplies and the tasty comida [food],” said Ceniceros, noting that Mrs. Soto’s Spanish class from Brownwood High School also helped with decorations and activities. “We also are very grateful for the high school students that took the time to create many of our decorations.”

Howard Payne Spanish club students also assisted in the celebration by telling the students the history of Cinco de Mayo and reading them a story in Spanish. “I am very pleased that Howard Payne students would also take their time to come and support this event even though its finals week,” said Ceniceros.  “Overall this a great celebration in which we, as a school, get to embrace the Hispanic culture.”
