Brown County Commissioners approved funding $10,000 toward the much needed repair of the roof at the Brown County Museum of History Annex at Monday’s meeting of the court.

Museum Board President Beverly Norris along with board member Putter Jarvis approached the court for the funds at the April 1 meeting of the court, stating that they had begun a campaign to raise needed funds for the $46,000 cost of the repair, raising $10,000 at that time.

Monday, after approval was given by commissioners to give an additional $10,000 towards the roof, Norris stated that media coverage and the court’s concern for the museum had helped to secure an anonymous donation of $28,000 which will allow the repair of the roof to be completed soon saving many priceless relics.

“Thank you for your support in solving this problem by contributing these monies,” Norris said to commissioners.  “Your attitude and concern for this problem and the media’s attention last week has impressed many in our community that a Brown County citizen was motivated by your actions and our pleas for your help, and an anonymous gift of $28,000 has been given.  This, combined with the money we have already raised, and now the county funds approved today, makes it possible for us to move forward, call for bids and hopefully have the Annex roof fixed within the next six weeks.”

The Brown County Museum of History is a non-profit entity, largely staffed with volunteers, and is dedicated to preserving the county’s rich history.  Just a few of the many artifacts in the museum include a woolly mammoth bone, a log cabin and a one-room school house dating from the 1800s, uniforms, letters and documents from World War II-era Camp Bowie.  The Museum of History is located at 212 North Broadway and is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  Admission is only $2.00.  Donations are always welcome and anyone interested in volunteering or donating historical items can contact the museum at 325-641-1926.
