Jon_Permentaer_and_Samantha_BurgessRunners of all ages took to the streets around Coggin Elementary on Saturday, February 23rd, to compete in the second annual Coggin Joggin 5K and 1.5 mile Walk/Fun Run.  “The turnout was wonderful due to the Coggin staff, PTO, and community,” said event coordinator, Brenda Hernandez.  “This year it was fantastic.”

The 5K run is a fundraising effort that aims to improve the Coggin Elementary playground equipment and the materials the students utilize inside.  Various community members, staff, and even some students participated in the race.  Coggin Elementary students also helped with the event by decorating bags and putting together the medals and other race materials. “The kids decorated the bags themselves with their own designs that said ‘Thank you’ or ‘Good luck,’” noted Hernandez.  “They really enjoyed it.”

The top male finisher, for the second year in a row, was Jon Permenter from Brownwood with a time of 21:15.  The top female finisher was Samantha Burgess from Ballinger, also with a time of 21:15.

This is the second year for the Coggin Joggin event, and the staff was pleased with the level of community support and participation. “As always the community didn’t let me down,” said Hernandez.  “We have a great community that comes together and we’ve received a great response.”
