New Early High School NHS Members Experience Annual “Kidnapping”

Bright and early on the morning of January 17th, new members of Early High School’s National Honor Society were climbing out of their beds, very much to their surprise. The night before, NHS held their induction ceremony to formally welcome all of the incoming students to the organization. Every year, returning members of NHS plan a “kidnapping” in which they travel to each newly inducted student’s home before the sun makes its appearance.

All parents are contacted prior to the “kidnapping,” and the old members are left to creatively awaken their new members as long as no harm is done. The sleepy students are given about three minutes to brush their teeth and gather their school items, and then are escorted to the car. After having some fun at Wal-Mart and a restaurant or two, the “kidnappers” bring their new NHS members to the high school to enjoy a welcoming breakfast before the school day begins.

Although they are usually somewhat drowsy, the students have fun spending the school day in their pajamas and sharing stories from the morning’s interesting events. Whether playing the role of “kidnapper,” who gets to enjoy being the guide of the early morning adventure, or the “victim,” who spends the adventure time scheming their sweet revenge on next year’s incoming members, this memorable tradition is one that all NHS members look forward to being a part of.
