A suspicious activity call in Bangs led to the arrest of two men from San Angelo for money laundering and possession of firearms in a weapons free zone early Sunday morning.

According to Bangs Chief of Police Troy Gruesendorf, an anonymous call led to an investigation of two subjects in a gold GMC Sierra pickup who were parked to the side of the Allsup’s convenience store in Bangs at 4:22 a.m. Sunday.  Grusendorf stated that the investigation led to the discovery that the two men, identified as 29-year-old Lance Sanchez and 29-year-old Dustin Schaaf both of San Angelo, were in possession of a large sum of money, $6065 in U.S. currency, and four firearms in a weapons free zone near the Bangs schools.  The firearms were identified as a .12 gauge pump shotgun, a snub-nosed .44 Magnum, a .357 Magnum and a Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol.

Both men were felons and it was believed that the men were picking up money, which was believed to be received from the proceeds of illegal narcotics sales in small towns as they drove from San Angelo to Brownwood, said Gruesendorf.

Both Schaaf and Sanchez were arrested, each charged with unlawful possession of firearm by felon in weapons free zone and money laundering equal or great than $1500 less than 20,000.  Sanchez and Schaaf were being held in the Brown County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $20,000 each as of Monday morning.

The money and firearms were seized by the Bangs Police Department.  According to Gruesendorf, the money has been turned over to the Brown County District Attorney’s office.
