Brownwood Lions opened district 8-3A play Friday night with a 25-13 win over Burnet, taking their place in a list of playoff hopefuls.  According to Brownwood Head Coach Bob Shipley, the game was a “huge one.”  He explained that the loser would be “behind the eight ball” when it came to getting into the playoffs.

Before the game, Shipley outlined that the team would have to do several things such as make good defensive stops, limit 3rd down conversions, not turn over the ball, do a good job with coverage and returns, and “win the hitting game.”

The Lions’ defense did a good job according to Shipley. The hitting game was effective, as several tackles or hits resulted in Burnet turning over the ball because it either got stripped or players were hit so hard that the ball came loose.

“We made some stops when we needed to and were able to stop some 3rd and 4th down conversions,” said Shipley.  But to win over Liberty Hill, he said that the Lions will have to have to stop being “sloppy,” not give up big plays and limit penalties which were abundant again on Friday for both teams.  Shipley stated that penalties called back a couple of big plays and that the team has to be more focused and limit penalties.

As far as not turning over the ball, that was something that would have to be worked on for coming games, as the Lions fumbled the ball three times as did Burnet.  However the Lions were able to get two interceptions from Burnet.

Although he won’t complain about a victory over Burnet Friday night, Brownwood Head Coach Bob Shipley has some work ahead of him to prepare his team for the game against 18th ranked Liberty Hill next week.

“We played good enough to win, but I’m frustrated because we have a lot to work on,” said Shipley.  “We have to start running effectively.  We are going to have to do a better job stopping than we did tonight.  There are a lot of ways we can improve.”
