The Brownwood Lions defeated the Sweetwater Mustangs 28-13, in a rain filled BHS homecoming game Friday night.

The game a unique situation with Coach Sam Harrell and his son Zack going head to head with their teams at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.   According to Coach Bob Shipley, the Sweetwater Mustangs are a different team than in years past.

“They are a totally different team than they have been in the last three years,” said Shipley.  “Sweetwater should be proud of their kids, they played well.  They’ve got some good coaches.”

Although the Lions came away with the win and improved their record to 2-3, Shipley stated he was still disappointed in the penalties the Lions continue to receive.

“We’ve got to go back and look at the film and get those corrected,” said Shipley.  “We’ve got to get better at third and fourth down conversions and missed tackles.”

Shipley was proud of two big offensive plays, a 65 yard kickoff return by Braxton Kilgo and a 95 yard run by Eddie Duque.

He stated that Brownwood’s district is a really tough one this year. Gatesville remains undefeated before district play begins.

“I believe Liberty Hill is still the team to beat,” said Shipley.  “Gatesville was 4-0 going into tonight’s game.”

Brownwood had two players who had more than 100 rushing yards in Friday’s game.  Shipley stated that the rain was good in that aspect, making the Lions keep most of the game on the ground.

All of the teams in District 8-3A are open next week, and Shipley stated that because of that, the team cannot scout any of these teams.  The open weekend will be good for the Lions according to Shipley because it gives several injured players time to heal and be ready for district competition.

Shipley stated that the Lions have also been holding off on some of the schemes they have been working on, not wanting to show any of their district competitors the coverage they want to use on Burnet.

“We’re going to go into district with a full arsenal,” said Shipley.

After the open week October 5th, the Lions will face Burnet on October 12th on the road.
