A group of women, called the Life Liners, are volunteering their time to teach a group of 5th and 6th graders in the Latch Key Program how to line dance.  The first class was a success and the women are scheduled to teach classes on a continual basis.

The first class was held on Friday September 21st for 5th and 6th graders. According to Latch Key Director, Jessica Hardy, “The kids were having a ball, and wanted to know when they would be back.” The women are scheduled to start classes for the students every two weeks.

The Life Liners group is comprised of members Madelon Merkler, Ruth Johnson, Shelia Carroll, and others. The women volunteer their time, and will continue to teach the class as long as the kids are enjoying it.  Photo contributed.

Founded in 1983, the Pearl Griffin Memorial Latch Key Program is located at 2411 Coggin Avenue in the First Christian Church in Brownwood, Texas.  The program serves children (Pre-K through 6th grade) who qualify from low income families to have after school care so that the children are not left home alone.  Currently, 80 children are served in Brownwood by Latch Key.  First Christian Church donates the classroom space and Howard Payne students help as teachers fulfilling two needs, a low cost staff for Latch Key and a job through the Work Study Program for the HPU students.  Latch Key is a United Way Organization.
